Using a media receiver for IPTV in the FRITZ!Box home network

If you use the FRITZ!Box on an internet connection with IPTV, you can receive unlimited TV channels and video on demand movies using the media receiver (set-top box) from the IPTV provider. The receiver is simply connected directly to the television set and the FRITZ!Box.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box must be connected to a DSL/IPTV connection, for example from Telekom (MagentaTV), Vodafone (Vodafone TV), A1, KPN, or Proximus.
  • It is only possible to play back HD channels or several channels at the same time if the DSL connection is fast enough. SD channels require data rates of around 4-6 Mbit/s, HD channels require around 10 Mbit/s (for each TV channel played at the same time).

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Configuring the FRITZ!Box

In the factory settings, the FRITZ!Box automatically assigns the correct IP settings to all devices via DHCP. If you disabled the FRITZ!Box's DHCP server, re-enable it:

Important:If the FRITZ!Box uses the internet connection of another router, then the DHCP server of the FRITZ!Box is disabled. In this case, the upstream router must assign the IP settings to the devices.

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Network" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
  4. Click the "IPv4 Addresses" button.
  5. Enable the DHCP server and define the range from which the FRITZ!Box assigns IP addresses.

Note:The FRITZ!Box has the IP address 192.168.178.1 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) and assigns IP addresses from xxx.20 to xxx.200 in the factory settings.

  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.

2 Setting up the media receiver

Make sure that the media receiver obtains its IP settings from the FRITZ!Box:

  1. Configure the media receiver to automatically obtain IP settings via DHCP (this is the default setting for most receivers). Refer to the manufacturer for information on how to set it up, for example consult the manual.

3 Connecting the media receiver to the FRITZ!Box

  1. Use a network cable to connect the media receiver to a LAN port on the FRITZ!Box.

Note:If you cannot connect the receiver and FRITZ!Box by cable, you can also connect them via Wi-Fi or your home's electrical wiring, for example with a FRITZ!Repeater or FRITZ!Powerline.

Now you can use your internet provider's IPTV and video on demand package with the media receiver.
