FRITZ!WLAN Stick is marked with a red X in the FRITZ!WLAN control software

The symbol for your FRITZ!WLAN Stick in the FRITZ!WLAN control software is marked with a red X and you cannot search for Wi-Fi networks.

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the problem is solved.

1 Avoiding use of Fast User Switching

If you use Fast User Switching in Windows (over "Switch user"), only the first user who started the FRITZ!WLAN control software can use it. Therefore, do not use Fast User Switching if all users should be able to use the control software.

Note:Existing Wi-Fi connections can be used by all users who are logged in, independently of the control software.

2 Checking the driver installation

  1. Remove the FRITZ!WLAN Stick from the USB port on your computer and then reconnect it.
  2. Click the search symbol in the Windows task bar.
  3. Enter Device Manager in the search box and press Enter.
  4. Check how the FRITZ!WLAN Stick is displayed under the device class "Network adapters":
  5. If the FRITZ!WLAN Stick is displayed with a red cross:
    1. Right-click the entry and select "Properties".
    2. Under "Device usage", select "Use this device (enable)".
    3. Click "OK".
    • If FRITZ!WLAN Stick is displayed with a yellow exclamation point:
      1. Right-click the entry and select "Uninstall" or "Remove".
      2. Click "OK" and follow the instructions.
      3. Restart your computer and reinstall the FRITZ!WLAN Stick.
    • If the FRITZ!WLAN Stick is displayed with a black arrow pointing downwards:
      1. Right-click the entry and select "Activate".
      2. Click "OK".
    • If the FRITZ!WLAN Stick is not listed:
      1. Check whether the entry "WLAN USB Device" is displayed under the device class "Other Devices".
      2. If this entry exists, right-click "WLAN USB Device", select "Uninstall > OK", and follow the instructions.
      3. Restart your computer and reinstall the FRITZ!WLAN Stick.

3 Connecting the FRITZ!WLAN Stick without a USB hub

The following step is only necessary if you connected the FRITZ!WLAN Stick to a USB hub (USB distributor) instead of directly to the USB port on your computer:

Note:The FRITZ!WLAN Stick can be used with many USB hubs that support at least USB 1.1. However, AVM cannot guarantee that USB hubs will work correctly.

  1. Remove the USB hub from the computer for testing purposes.
  2. Connect the FRITZ!WLAN Stick directly to the USB port on the computer.

4 Installing the latest chipset drivers for your computer

  1. On the computer, install the latest chipset drivers for the mainboard. You can find the latest drivers on the website of the mainboard or chipset manufacturer.

Note:The chipset is a part of the mainboard that computer components are attached or connected to.

5 Testing on a different computer

  1. Install the FRITZ!WLAN Stick on a different computer and check whether the same error also occurs with that computer.
  2. If the error does not occur with the other computer, consult the manufacturer of the first computer. There is no error on the part of the FRITZ!WLAN Stick.
