FRITZ!Box 3272 Serwis

DSL throughput is too low

The FRITZ!Box displays the actual DSL speed of the DSL line on the user interface under "Internet > DSL Information > DSL" in the "Current throughput" line. According to this, the current throughput is significantly lower than the speed specified in your DSL service agreement with your DSL provider.

Cause

  • The throughput of the DSL connection primarily depends on the length and quality of the access line. Faults in the cabling or problems with the Internet service provider's exchange (DSLAM) can also affect it.

Note:With many DSL lines, you will not be able to fully achieve the guaranteed throughput. Therefore, DSL providers say that they offer DSL speeds of "up to" a certain value.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the issue persists.

1 Checking the cabling

Mistakes in the cabling can often be overlooked, but they can significantly reduce the DSL speed. Therefore, check the wiring in your home:

  • Make sure that the FRITZ!Box is connected correctly to your DSL line. Remove the following:
    • if you have an IP-based line: the DSL splitter,
    • all cable extensions,
    • unused cables and telephone jacks,
    • additional electrical components (for example surge protection, automatic extension outlets).

2 Resetting the interference resistance

Set the controls for interference resistance to "Maximum Performance" since any other setting can have a negative effect on the speed of the DSL connection:

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "DSL Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click on the "Line Settings" tab.
  4. Click on the "Reset Setting" link.
    • The interference resistance is now automatically set to "Maximum Performance".

3 Using a different DSL version

The DSL version of the FRITZ!Box undergoes constant development with each version of FRITZ!OS to ensure that it can establish optimal DSL connections under all circumstances. In individual cases (for example on DSL lines with outdated DSLAMs) the FRITZ!Box may be able to negotiate higher data rates with certain DSL versions. Therefore, test the current and the previous DSL version:

Using the latest FRITZ!OS

The DSL version is part of FRITZ!OS. Make sure that the FRITZ!Box is using the latest FRITZ!OS and therefore the latest DSL version:

Using the previous DSL version

If the issue occurs with the latest DSL version (for example after updating FRITZ!OS), test the DSL version of the previous FRITZ!OS:

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "DSL Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click on the "Line Settings" tab.
  4. Enable the option "Use previous DSL version".
  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
    • Now the previous DSL version is enabled and the FRITZ!Box is restarted. The restart will take about two minutes.

Note:If this resolves the issue, you can easily send us feedback on your FRITZ!Box's synchronization method under "Internet > DSL Information > Feedback".

4 Checking the DSL line

Checking the maximum DSL throughput

DSL providers set a maximum achievable throughput for each DSL line. The speed that can actually be achieved on your DSL line cannot be higher than this maximum throughput.

Therefore, check whether your DSL provider set the correct maximum throughput value for your DSL line:

Note:The maximum throughput can only be displayed on the user interface if you have an ADSL2+ line.

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "DSL Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. You can find the maximum speed set for your DSL line on the "DSL" tab in the "Max. DSLAM throughput" line. Compare this throughput with the speed specified in your DSL service agreement with your DSL provider.
    • If the speed specified in your DSL service agreement is higher than the speed set for your DSL line:
      • Contact your DSL provider.

Testing the DSL speed with a different DSL modem

With many DSL lines, you will not be able to fully achieve the speed guaranteed by your DSL provider. To check whether the quality of your DSL line is limiting the throughput or whether it is due to a technical issue, use a different DSL modem to test the DSL speed:

Important:Test the other modem soon after you finish testing the FRITZ!Box to ensure that you test it under the same conditions.

  1. Disconnect the FRITZ!Box from the DSL line.
  2. Connect a different DSL modem to the DSL line.
  3. Test which DSL speed you achieve with the other DSL modem.
    • If the DSL speed is also significantly lower than the speed guaranteed by the provider when you use a different DSL modem:
      • Contact your DSL provider.

ATTENTION!Your DSL provider may charge you for checking your DSL line. Ask your DSL provider about charges in advance!
