FRITZ!VPN cannot establish a VPN connection to FRITZ!Box

You cannot establish a VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box using the FRITZ!VPN software. One of the following error messages may be displayed in FRITZ!VPN's journal:

  • "Timeout, could not contact the remote site."
  • "Could not resolve the name of the remote site."
  • "The VPN connection cannot be established because FRITZ!VPN could not find any active connection to the Internet. Please connect to the Internet first."

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the issue persists.

1 Checking whether a public IP address was obtained

You can only establish a VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box if the Internet service provider assigns the FRITZ!Box an IPv4 address from the public address range when it establishes an Internet connection:

Important:The FRITZ!Box is not accessible via VPN when used on a DS-Lite ("Dual-Stack Lite") connection. When DS-Lite is active, the status "IPv4 over DS Lite" is displayed under "Connections" on the "Overview" page of the FRITZ!Box user interface.

2 Maintain a permanent Internet connection

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click on "Change connection settings".
  4. Enable the option "Maintain permanently (recommended for flat rates)".

Important:If the option is not available, then the FRITZ!Box already remains permanently connected to the Internet.

  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

3 Checking the login status of the FRITZ!Box's domain name

If the VPN connection occasionally cannot be established, then there may be an issue with the dynamic DNS service or MyFRITZ!. Therefore, check whether the FRITZ!Box is successfully logged into the dynamic DNS service or MyFRITZ! when you attempt to establish the VPN connection:

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Online Monitor" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Check whether the status "logged on successfully" is displayed for dynamic DNS or MyFRITZ!'s status is active.
    • If the status "logged on successfully" is displayed for dynamic DNS or MyFRITZ!'s status is active:
      • Proceed with the following section.
    • If the status "logged on successfully" is not displayed for dynamic DNS or MyFRITZ!'s status is not active:
      • Wait until the technical issues have been resolved and try to establish the VPN connection at a later point in time. In case of a permanent error, reconfigure the dynamic DNS account or MyFRITZ! account, or consult the dynamic DNS provider.

4 Mobile Broadband Driver is not supported

The FRITZ!VPN software currently cannot be used with the Mobile Broadband Driver for Windows 8 / 7 or Huawei ("HUAWEI Mobile Connect"). If the Internet connection is established by a mobile broadband modem or a mobile broadband dongle that complies with the LTE or UMTS mobile standard, and the modem or dongle uses this driver, you cannot establish a VPN connection with FRITZ!VPN.

Workaround

You can use the FRITZ!VPN software if the mobile broadband modem or mobile broadband dongle can also be used without a Mobile Broadband Driver:

  • Configure the mobile broadband modem or mobile broadband dongle so that it uses a different driver (for example a "WAN-Miniport(IP)" driver) instead of the Mobile Broadband Driver for Windows 8 / 7 or Huawei.

Note:You can find information on using the mobile broadband modem or mobile broadband dongle with other drivers in the device's manual, or consult the manufacturer directly.

5 Configuring a firewall for FRITZ!VPN

If a firewall (for example software firewall or NAT router) protects the Internet connection of the computer with FRITZ!VPN, you may have to open the ports and enable the IP protocols required by FRITZ!VPN before you can establish a VPN connection:

6 Adjusting the IP networks

In order for VPN communication to occur, the computer with FRITZ!VPN and the FRITZ!Box must use different IP networks. If the computer with FRITZ!VPN and the FRITZ!Box are in the same IP network, you must either change the IP settings of the computer with FRITZ!VPN or those of the remote FRITZ!Box:

Example:
The FRITZ!Box uses the IP address 192.168.178.1 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) in the factory settings; this means that it uses the IP network 192.168.178.0.
If the computer with FRITZ!VPN receives the IP address 192.168.20.13 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) via DHCP, then it is located in the IP network 192.168.20.0 and can establish a VPN connection to the FRITZ!Box.
If the computer with FRITZ!VPN is also connected to a FRITZ!Box and both FRITZ!Boxes use the IP network 192.168.178.0, then a VPN connection cannot be established.

  • Change the IP address of the computer with FRITZ!VPN,

Important:If the computer is located in a network (for example of a different FRITZ!Box), the entire IP network must be changed.

    • or:
      1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
      2. Click "Home Network Overview" in the "Home Network" menu.
      3. Click on the "Network Settings" tab.
      4. Click the "IPv4 Addresses" button.
      5. Enter an IP address from a different IP network (for example 192.168.10.1).
      6. Enter the subnet mask (for example 255.255.255.0) that corresponds to the IP network.
      7. Click "OK" to save the settings.
      8. Click "Permit Access" in the "Internet" menu.
      9. Click on the "VPN" tab.
      10. Delete all of the VPN connections that are displayed.
      11. Delete the VPN connection in Configure FRITZ!VPN and the VPN connection in FRITZ!VPN.
      12. Reconfigure a VPN connection between FRITZ!VPN and the FRITZ!Box.

7 Deleting VPN connections and reconfiguring them

If the VPN connection cannot be established at all, then the VPN configuration in FRITZ!VPN or the FRITZ!Box is incorrect (for example due to a typing error, an incorrect MyFRITZ! or dynamic DNS domain name, or an error made when editing the CFG file). Therefore, reconfigure the VPN connection:

  1. Delete the VPN connection in the Configure FRITZ!Box VPN Connection software.
  2. Delete the VPN connection in the FRITZ!VPN software and in the FRITZ!Box.
  3. Reconfigure a VPN connection between FRITZ!VPN and the FRITZ!Box.
