Configuring a firewall for FRITZ!VPN

With the FRITZ!VPN software you can establish a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection over the Internet from a Windows computer to your FRITZ!Box and then access all of the network devices and services in the FRITZ!Box home network.

If the computer's Internet connection is protected by a firewall (for example a software firewall or router), you may have to open the ports and enable the IP protocols required by FRITZ!VPN in the router before you can establish a VPN connection.

1 Configuring the firewall

  • Configure the firewall so that it allows incoming and outgoing connections for the following ports and IP protocols:

Note:You can find information on configuring the firewall in its manual, or consult its manufacturer directly. The settings required for FRITZ!VPN are enabled by default in many routers (for example the FRITZ!Box) and do not have to be configured manually.

    • ESP ("Encapsulated Security Payload"; IP protocol number 50)

Note:In many NAT routers, the option for enabling the ESP protocol is called "IPsec Passthrough".

    • UDP port 53 (DNS)
    • UDP port 500 (ISAKMP)
    • UDP port 4500 (NAT traversal)
