Registering an IP telephone with the FRITZ!Box and setting it up

You can register a total of ten IP telephones with the FRITZ!Box. IP or SIP telephones are telephones for Internet telephony (VoIP). They are available as telephony devices (hardphone), a combination of adapter and regular telephone, or a software solution for your computer.

If you register your IP telephone with the FRITZ!Box over the Internet or a VPN connection, besides making calls from home, you can then also make calls over the FRITZ!Box from anywhere.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • A maximum of ten IP telephones (including FRITZ!App Fon) can be registered.
  • The FRITZ!Box (IP address 192.168.178.1 in the factory settings) should use an IP address from one of the following private IP address ranges:
    • 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
    • 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
    • 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
  • The IP telephone must use an IP address from the FRITZ!Box's IP address range.

Note:These requirements do not apply if you would like to register the telephone over a VPN connection between two FRITZ!Boxes.

  • You cannot register an IP telephone using guest access.
  • You cannot use IP telephones for fax and data connections.
  • Various FRITZ!Box functions cannot be used with IP telephones. For example, this is the case with call transfer, busy on busy, call-back on busy / no response, do not disturb function for individual numbers, the ability to control certain FRITZ!Box functions such as turning wireless LAN on and off, loading factory settings, or setting up call diversions.

1 Configuring telephone numbers in the FRITZ!Box

First, configure all of your telephone numbers in the FRITZ!Box:

2 Connecting the telephone to the FRITZ!Box

3 Enabling the telephony function in the FRITZ!Box

The telephony function is hidden in the FRITZ!Box user interface in the factory settings. If you enable the following setting, you can also use the FRITZ!Box with an IP telephone (for example FRITZ!App Fon) for Internet telephony.

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Enable support for FRITZ!App Fon in the FRITZ!Box".
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

4 Configuring a telephone in the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephony Devices" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the "Configure New Device" button.
  4. Enable the option "Telephone (with or without answering machine)" and click "Next".
  5. Enable the option "LAN/WLAN (IP telephone)" and click "Next".
  6. Enter a password that is at least 8 characters long and does not contain the user name.
  7. Click "Next".
  8. Select the number to be used by the telephone to make calls.
  9. Click "Continue".
  10. Select the telephone numbers that the telephone should react to.
  11. Click "Next" and then "Finish" to save your settings.

5 Entering registration information on the telephone

  • On your telephone, enter an Internet number with the following registration information:
    • SIP Registrar
      • If you only would like to use the telephone at home, enter fritz.box or the IP address of the FRITZ!Box (192.168.178.1 in the factory settings).

Important:If the telephone failed to register or you are unable to make telephone calls, then you must enter the FRITZ!Box's IP address.

        • or, if you also would like to register the IP telephone with the FRITZ!Box over the Internet:
        • Enter the public IP address of the FRITZ!Box.

Note:Most Internet service providers clear the Internet connection each day ("automatic disconnection") and assign the FRITZ!Box a different IP address when the connection is automatically re-established. The FRITZ!Box can be accessed over the Internet under its MyFRITZ! domain name at all times, even if its public IP address changes on a regular basis.

    • User name
      • Enter the user name as displayed in the FRITZ!Box user interface (for example 620).
    • Password
      • Enter the same password on the telephone that you entered in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
    • STUN server
      • Do not enter a STUN server.

Now you can use the telephone to make and receive calls using the telephone numbers you configured.

6 Configuring the telephone for registration from the Internet

The following step is only necessary if you also would like to register the IP telephone with the FRITZ!Box from the Internet. This setting allows the IP telephone to register itself even without an IP address from the FRITZ!Box's IP address range:

Important:It is possible to register and use telephones that access the FRITZ!Box over the Internet. However, we cannot guarantee that this function will work since registration depends on external factors on which the FRITZ!Box does not have any influence.

  1. Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Telephony Devices" in the "Telephony" menu.
  3. Click the button (Edit) for the respective telephone.
  4. Click on the "'Account Information" tab.
  5. Enable the option "Allow registration from the Internet".
  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.

7 Supported telephony functions

Normally you can use a telephone keypad to use a number of FRITZ!Box functions. However, this only works to a certain degree with IP telephones. The CLIP (display of Caller IDs) and CLIR (suppression of own Caller ID) functions can also be used when conducting calls with IP telephones. In addition, you can conduct internal telephone calls with other telephones, pick up calls from other telephones connected to the FRITZ!Box, and use quick-dial numbers as well as vanity codes from the FRITZ!Box telephone book.

Note:You can find the internal numbers of your telephony devices in the user interface under "Telephone Book > Internal Numbers".
