Setting up IPv6 port forwarding in the FRITZ!Box

By default, the FRITZ!Box's firewall protects all of the devices in the FRITZ!Box home network from incoming connections and unsolicited data from the Internet.

You can configure IPv6 port forwarding to allow users in the Internet to access certain server services or network devices that are IPv6 compatible (for example HTTP server, remote maintenance server, NAS system) in your FRITZ!Box home network.

Note:If the server service or network device can be accessed with a web browser, then you can use a MyFRITZ! Access to safely and conveniently access the server service over the Internet at any time.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box must obtain an IPv6 address from the Internet service provider.
  • The server service or network device you are setting up port forwarding for must support the IPv6 protocol.
  • You can only access the server service or network device with IPv6 Internet connections.

Note:You can test whether a device can access the Internet over IPv6 on a particular Internet connection by calling up www.test-ipv6.com or www.ipv6-test.com on the device in question.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS.

1 Preparations

Determining ports and IP protocols

  • Consult the manual or ask the manufacturer to find out which ports and/or IP protocols the server service or network device uses to accept incoming connections.

Configuring the computer's firewall

If the server service or Internet application is installed on a computer with its own firewall (for example Windows firewall), you must also configure the firewall:

  • Configure the computer's firewall so that the server service or Internet application can be accessed from the FRITZ!Box home network.

Note:You can find information on configuring the firewall in its manual, or consult its manufacturer directly.

2 Setting up port sharing in the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Permit Access" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click on the "IPv6" tab.
  4. Select the network device (for example a computer, NAS system) that you would like to set up port sharing for:
    • If port sharing has not been configured for the network device yet:
      1. Click "New Device".
      2. Select the (computer) name of the network device from the drop-down list "Name".

Note:All network devices that automatically obtain their IPv6 settings (DHCP) from the FRITZ!Box are listed in the drop-down list "Name". If the network device is not listed, select the "User-defined" entry, then enter the name and Interface ID of the network device.

    • If port sharing was already configured for the network device:
      1. Click the button (Edit) for the relevant (computer) name of the network device.
      2. Click "New Port Forwarding".
  5. Select the IP protocol (TCP or UDP) to be used for the port forwarding rule from the drop-down list "Protocol".
  6. Enter the number(s) of the ports to be shared:
    • In order to enable port sharing for a single port:
      • Enter the number of the port for incoming Internet connections in the "From port" and "through port" fields.
    • In order to enable port sharing for a port range:
      • Enter the first port for incoming Internet connections in the "From port" field and the last port in the "To port" field.
  7. Click "OK" to save the settings.

3 Setting up the FRITZ!Box for access over the Internet

Setting up a MyFRITZ! account and determining the domain name

With MyFRITZ! you can even access your FRITZ!Box over the Internet at all times if its public IP address changes on a regular basis, for example after "automatic disconnection" by the Internet service provider.

Note:If you already use a different dynamic DNS service that supports IPv6, you can also use this service instead of MyFRITZ!.

  1. Set up a MyFRITZ! account in the FRITZ!Box.
  2. Determine the MyFRITZ! domain name of the FRITZ!Box.

Maintaining a permanent Internet connection

  1. Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
  3. Click on "Change connection settings".
  4. Enable the option "Maintain permanently (recommended for flat rates)".

Important:If the option is not available, then the FRITZ!Box already remains permanently connected to the Internet.

  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
