Extending wireless range of the FRITZ!Box with a repeater

You can increase the wireless range (WiFi) of your FRITZ!Box with Internet access (access point) if you set up a FRITZ!Box 4020 for use as a repeater. This allows you to:

  • completely integrate network devices (for example computers, smartphones) connected to the FRITZ!Box 4020 into your home network. You can use them to access the Internet as well as other devices in the home network. All of the functions of the FRITZ!Box (access point) are also available to them.
  • allow your guests to use the guest wireless network and enjoy fast and secure Internet access, even when they are far from the FRITZ!Box (access point). The wireless devices used by your guests remain completely separated from your home network.

Here we show you how to set up the FRITZ!Box 4020 as a repeater.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The FRITZ!Box with Internet access (access point) must support the repeater function.
  • Currently we cannot guarantee that you will be able to play IPTV programs with the FRITZ!Box (repeater) without experiencing problems.

Note:We recommend connecting media receivers either directly or by means of a powerline adapter (for example FRITZ!Powerline) to a LAN port on the FRITZ!Box (access point).

  • The wireless network name (SSID) of the FRITZ!Box (access point) must be visible.

1 Configuring the FRITZ!Box (access point)

All FRITZ!Boxes are configured for use as an access point in the factory settings. If you changed the wireless settings of the FRITZ!Box with Internet access, configure the following settings in that FRITZ!Box:

Enabling the wireless network

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the wireless network.
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
  5. Only if the FRITZ!Box can provide a wireless radio network in either the 2.4 GHz or the 5 GHz frequency band, enable the 2.4 GHz frequency band:
    1. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
    2. Enable the option "Adjust radio channel settings".
    3. Select the standard "802.11n+g" or "802.11n+g+b" from the "Wireless standard" drop-down list.
    4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Displaying the name of the wireless network (SSID)

Make sure that the wireless network name of the FRITZ!Box (access point) is visible:

Note:Hiding the wireless network name can represent a security risk (see article in PC World: 5 Wi-Fi security myths you must abandon now).

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Name of the wireless radio network visible".
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Briefly disabling the MAC address filter

The FRITZ!Box's MAC address filter may not be enabled during configuration:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Allow all new wireless devices" in the "Restricting wireless LAN access" section.

Note:With some FRITZ!Box models you will find this setting under "Wireless (WLAN) > Radio Network" instead of under "Wireless (WLAN) > Security".

  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

The MAC address filter is now disabled. You can re-enable it as soon as you have completed the configuration of the wireless connection between the FRITZ!Box (repeater) and the FRITZ!Box (access point).

Configuring the operating mode

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Repeater" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Access point".
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

2 Configuring the FRITZ!Box (repeater)

Preparations

  • Use a network cable to connect a computer to a LAN port on the FRITZ!Box you would like to set up as a repeater.
    • Only if the computer is already connected with the FRITZ!Box (access point):
      • Clear the network connection between the computer and the FRITZ!Box (access point).

Adjusting the wireless settings of the FRITZ!Box (access point)

Configure the following settings in the FRITZ!Box (repeater) so that your wireless devices can always automatically connect to the FRITZ!Box with the strongest signal (wireless roaming):

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. For the frequency band being used, enter the same "Name of the wireless radio network (SSID)" that you entered in the FRITZ!Box (access point).
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
  5. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  6. Enable the option "WPA Encryption".
  7. Select "WPA2 (CCMP)" for the "WPA mode".

Note:If you still use wireless devices that do not support WPA2, you can use the setting "WPA + WPA2". If you select this setting, your wireless devices will automatically use the safest WPA mode for wireless connections.

  8. In the "Network key" field, enter the same network key that you entered in the FRITZ!Box (access point).
  9. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Configuring the operating mode

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Repeater" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Repeater".
  4. Under "Access Point Selection", search for the name of the wireless network (SSID) of the FRITZ!Box (access point) and select it.

Note:If the FRITZ!Box (access point) is not listed, decrease the distance between it and the FRITZ!Box (repeater) and click the "Refresh List" button.

  5. Enter the network key of the FRITZ!Box (access point) in the "Network key" field.
  6. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Now the wireless connection between both FRITZ!Boxes is established.

3 Finding the ideal location for the FRITZ!Box (repeater)

  • Select a location for the FRITZ!Box (repeater) where the wireless connection between other wireless devices (for example smartphones, tablets) and the FRITZ!Box (access point) is flawless.
  • Do not position the FRITZ!Box (repeater) directly in the corner of a room.
  • Position the FRITZ!Box (repeater) so that it is as unobstructed as possible, i.e. not directly in back of or under an obstacle such as pieces of furniture or a heater.
  • Position the FRITZ!Box (repeater) as high in the room as possible, for example on a shelf.
  • Make sure that there are as few obstacles as possible between the FRITZ!Box (repeater) and the FRITZ!Box (access point). In particular, metallic objects or objects containing water (for example a refrigerator, radiator, houseplants) significantly reduce the quality of the wireless signal.
  • Position the FRITZ!Box (repeater) so that it is away from other transmitters (for example microwaves, baby monitors, wireless speakers, Bluetooth devices).

4 Opening the FRITZ!Box user interface

Opening the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (access point)

  • Enter fritz.box in the address bar of the web browser.

Opening the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (repeater)

  1. Click "Home Network" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (access point).
  2. Click "Home Network Overview" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the link for the FRITZ!Box (repeater),
    • or:
  • Enter the DHCP host name of the FRITZ!Box (repeater), for example "attic", in the address bar of the web browser,
    • or:
  • Enter the IP address that the FRITZ!Box (access point) assigned to the FRITZ!Box (repeater) (for example 192.168.178.25) in the address field of the web browser.

Note:You can find the IP address of the FRITZ!Box (repeater) in the user interface of the FRITZ!Box (access point) under "Home Network > Home Network Overview > Network Connections".
