Printer does not print when used as a network printer

A USB printer connected to the FRITZ!Box does not execute print jobs from a computer in the FRITZ!Box home network.

Requirements / Restrictions

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the issue persists.

1 Disabling the option "use printer online" for the printer

The following step is only necessary if you are sending print jobs from a Windows computer:

Windows 10 / 8:

  1. Press the keyboard shortcut "Windows key" + "X" and select "Control Panel" from the context menu.
  2. Click "Hardware and Sound" and then "Devices and printers" in the "Control Panel" menu.
  3. Right-click the printer that is connected to the FRITZ!Box.
  4. Select "See what's printing" from the context menu.
  5. Call up the "Printer" menu in the next window.
  6. If there is a checkmark in front of the option "Use Printer Offline", click the entry to remove it.

Windows 7:

  1. In Windows, click "Start" and then "Devices and Printers".
  2. Right-click the printer that is connected to the FRITZ!Box.
  3. Select "See what's printing" from the context menu.
  4. Call up the "Printer" menu in the next window.
  5. If there is a checkmark in front of the option "Use Printer Offline", click the entry to remove it.

2 Disabling bidirectional support for the printer

Windows 10 / 8:

You cannot enable the option "enable bidirectional support" for network printers in Windows 10 and Windows 8. Therefore, you do not need to change the printer settings.

Windows 7:

  1. In Windows, click "Start" and then "Devices and Printers".
  2. Right-click the printer that is connected to the FRITZ!Box and select "Printer properties" from the context menu.
  3. Switch to the "Ports" tab.
  4. Disable the option "Enable bidirectional support".
  5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

macOS, Linux, and other operating systems:

  • Disable bidirectional support for the printer.

Note:The manufacturer of the printer can provide you with information on how to disable bidirectional support for the printer, or you can find information on this procedure in the operating system's help.

3 Configuring the firewall to allow network access to the printer

  • Configure the computer's firewall so that it allows outgoing connections to TCP Port 9100 on the FRITZ!Box.

Note:You can find information on configuring the firewall in its manual, or consult its manufacturer directly.

4 The FRITZ!Box does not support the printer

In order to use a printer connected to the FRITZ!Box as a network printer, it must be able to receive data in RAW format (unidirectional RAW over TCP). USB printers that require encapsulated or bidirectional data transmission cannot be used as network printers with the FRITZ!Box. This is the case with some GDI printers ("Windows printers"), LIDIL printers ("Lightweight Imaging Device Interface Language") as well as DOT4 printers (IEEE 1284 standard).

Workaround

The FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software enables you to use USB printers with the FRITZ!Box, even if they cannot be used as network printers with the FRITZ!Box:
