Integrating a FRITZ!Box into the home network via powerline

If you already have a FRITZ!Box, you can connect another FRITZ!Box to it over your home's electrical wiring, for example with FRITZ!Powerline, and configure the second FRITZ!Box so that it uses the first FRITZ!Box's internet connection (operation as an IP client).

This way devices connected to the FRITZ!Box are completely integrated into your home network. You can use these devices to access the internet as well as other devices in the home network, and they can use all of the functions offered by the FRITZ!Box connected to the internet.

Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for your FRITZ!Box.

1 Configuring the FRITZ!Box

Preparations

  • Either use a network cable or wireless LAN to connect a computer to the FRITZ!Box you want to use in the home network. If the computer is already connected to the FRITZ!Box that establishes the internet connection, clear this connection.

Configuring the operating mode

  1. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Enter the FRITZ!Box password on the underside of the device and click "Log In".
  3. Click "Internet" and then "Account Information".
  4. Select "Internet router as IP client" from the drop-down list "Internet connection via".
  5. Enter the data throughput of your internet connection in the "Downstream" and "Upstream" fields.

    Example:
    Enter 50000 for a downstream of 50 Mbit/s; enter 5000 for an upstream of 5 Mbit/s.

  6. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

The FRITZ!Box is now configured for for operation in the home network.

Important:In this operating mode, the FRITZ!Box can no longer be reached at http://fritz.box. Instead, to access it you must use the Mesh or home network overview of the FRITZ!Box with internet access or use the IP address that is assigned to it.

2 Connecting the FRITZ!Box

Here we show you how to connect two FRITZ!Boxes over your home's electrical wiring using FRITZ!Powerline as an example:

Note:Refer to the respective manufacturer for information on setting up other powerline adapters, for example consult the manual.

  1. Plug the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter into an outlet near the FRITZ!Box with internet access.
  2. Plug the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter into an outlet near the FRITZ!Box in the home network.
    • Now the powerline connection is automatically established and the "Powerline" LEDs on both adapters remain lit.

Note:Upon delivery, the adapters from a FRITZ!Powerline set use a unique network password. You do not have to configure any additional settings before using them.

  3. Use a network cable to connect the first FRITZ!Powerline adapter to a LAN port on the FRITZ!Box with internet access.
  4. Use a network cable to connect the second FRITZ!Powerline adapter to the "WAN" port on the FRITZ!Box in the home network.
    • As soon as the "LAN" LEDs on both of the FRITZ!Powerline adapters remain lit, the connection is established.

3 Setting up wireless LAN

You can use the FRITZ!Box in the home network as an additional wireless access point. This way your wireless devices can access the internet and other devices in the home network, even if the wireless network of the FRITZ!Box with internet access is not available.

If the FRITZ!Box with internet access uses the 2.4 GHz wireless frequency band, you can configure the FRITZ!Box in the home network so your wireless devices always automatically connect with the FRITZ!Box with the strongest signal (wireless roaming). To do so, configure the following settings:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enter the wireless network name of the FRITZ!Box with internet access in the field "Name of the wireless radio network (SSID)".
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  5. If you disabled automatic channel selection in the FRITZ!Box with internet access and set a wireless channel, set the same channel in the FRITZ!Box in the home network:
    1. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
    2. Enable the option "Adjust radio channel settings" in the "Radio Channel Settings" section.
    3. From the drop-down list "Radio channel", select the channel used by the FRITZ!Box with internet access.
    4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  6. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  7. Enable the option "WPA encryption".
  8. Select "WPA2 (CCMP)" for the "WPA mode". If not all of your wireless devices support WPA2 encryption, select the option "WPA + WPA2".
  9. Enter the network key of the FRITZ!Box with internet access in the "Network key" field.
  10. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
