Changing FRITZ!Box's wireless security settings

The FRITZ!Box's wireless network (WiFi) is already protected against unauthorized access by secure WPA/WPA2 encryption and the use of a unique network key in its factory settings. In order to establish a wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box, you must either enter this network key in the wireless device (for example a computer, smartphone, game console) manually or push the "WLAN" button on the FRITZ!Box (WPS method) to set it up automatically.

If you do not want to use the factory settings, you can change the wireless security settings of your FRITZ!Box.

Note:The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for your FRITZ!Box.

1 Enabling the wireless network

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the wireless network.
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

2 Changing the wireless security settings

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Security" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Click on the "Encryption" tab.

ATTENTION!WPA encryption offers the best security and thus should be selected whenever possible. Only use a different encryption method if the wireless devices being used do not support WPA encryption.

  4. If you would like to use secure WPA encryption (recommended):
    1. Enable the option "WPA encryption".
    2. Select "WPA2 (CCMP)" for the "WPA mode".

Note:If you still use wireless devices that do not support WPA2, use the setting "WPA + WPA2". If you select this setting, your wireless devices will automatically use the safest WPA mode for wireless connections.

    3. Enter a password of your choice that is between 8 and 63 characters long in the "Network key" field.

Important:To ensure optimal security, the password should be at least 20 characters long and contain capital and lower-case letters (but not letters such as ä, ë, ö, ü, é, í), digits, and other characters.

    • If you would like to use non-secure WEP encryption (not recommended):
    1. Enable the option "WEP encryption".
    2. Enter a password of your choice that is 13 characters long in the "Network key" field.

Important:The network key may only contain capital and lower-case letters (but not letters such as ä, ë, ö, ü, é, í) as well as digits.

    • If you do not want to use encryption (not recommended), which would leave your wireless network unprotected, enable the option "non-encrypted".
  5. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Now the popup window "Wireless LAN Access" with the new wireless security settings for the FRITZ!Box opens. Print out or make note of these settings and then reconfigure the wireless connection to the FRITZ!Box.
