FRITZ!Box's wireless network cannot be found

Your wireless device (for example a notebook, smartphone, tablet) cannot find the FRITZ!Box's wireless network (WiFi). It does not display the name of the FRITZ!Box's wireless network (SSID) when it searches for wireless networks.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the issue persists.

1 Enabling the wireless network

The following step is only necessary if the "WLAN" LED on the FRITZ!Box is not lit:

  • Briefly push the "WLAN" button to enable the FRITZ!Box's wireless network,
    • or, if you enabled keylock in the FRITZ!Box,
      1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
      2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
      3. Enable the wireless network.
      4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

2 Enabling the wireless device

Some notebooks have a special switch or a key combination to turn integrated wireless network adapters on and off:

  • Enable the wireless device that you would like to connect to the FRITZ!Box's wireless network.

Note:You can find information on how to enable it in the corresponding manual, or consult the manufacturer directly.

3 Adjusting the FRITZ!Box's wireless settings

Preparations

  • Use a network cable to connect a computer to the "LAN 2" port on the FRITZ!Box.

Displaying the name of the wireless network (SSID)

Some wireless devices cannot establish a wireless connection if the name of the FRITZ!Box's wireless network is not visible:

Note:Hiding the wireless network name can represent a security risk (see article in PC World: 5 Wi-Fi security myths you must abandon now).

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Name of the wireless radio network visible".
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Changing the name of the wireless network (SSID)

Some wireless devices (for example Apple iPhone) cannot establish a wireless connection if the name of the wireless network contains special characters:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enter a name of your choice that does not contain special characters in the field "Name of the wireless radio network (SSID)".

Important:Not all wireless devices support all special characters. Therefore, only use standard Latin letters (not letters such as ä, ë, ö, ü, á, é, í) and numbers in the wireless network name.

  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Adjusting wireless channels in the 2.4 GHz frequency band

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Enable the option "Set radio channel settings automatically (recommended)".
  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
  5. Check whether the FRITZ!Box's wireless network can now be found.
    • If the wireless network still cannot be found:
      1. Enable the option "Adjust radio channel settings".
      2. Select "Autochannel" from the drop-down list "Radio channel in 2.4-GHz frequency band".
      3. Click "Additional settings".
      4. Disable the option "Wireless auto channel including channel 12/13 (2.4 GHz frequency band)".

Note:Since the use of channels 12 and 13 is not allowed in USA, some wireless devices cannot establish wireless connections with these channels.

      5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

4 Installing the latest software for the wireless device

  • Install the latest driver for your computer's wireless network adapter or the latest operating system (for example Android, iOS) for the wireless device.

Note:You can find information on updating the wireless network adapter or wireless device in its manual, or consult the manufacturer directly.
You can find the latest drivers for the FRITZ!WLAN Sticks in our download area.

5 Finding the ideal location for wireless devices

  • If possible, position the FRITZ!Box in a room that is centrally located.
  • Do not position the FRITZ!Box directly in the corner of a room.
  • Position the FRITZ!Box so that it is as unobstructed as possible, i.e. not directly in back of or under an obstacle such as pieces of furniture or a heater.
  • Position the FRITZ!Box as high in the room as possible, for example on a shelf.
  • Position the FRITZ!Box so that there are as few obstacles as possible between it and the other wireless devices. In particular, metallic objects or objects containing water (for example a refrigerator, houseplants) significantly reduce the quality of the wireless signal.
  • Position the FRITZ!Box so that it is away from other transmitters (for example microwaves, baby monitors, wireless speakers, Bluetooth devices).
  • For testing purposes, position the FRITZ!Box and the wireless device as close as possible.

Note:Once you have ruled out all other sources of error, you can increase the distance between the two devices again.

6 Testing a different wireless device

  • Test whether a different wireless device can find FRITZ!Box's wireless network.
    • If the other wireless device is able to find the FRITZ!Box's wireless network, then the first wireless device may be defective.
