Using a PlayStation 4 in the FRITZ!Box home network

You can easily connect a PlayStation 4 to a LAN port or the wireless network (WiFi) of your FRITZ!Box. The PlayStation can then access the Internet and be used as a playback device for videos, music, and image files in the FRITZ!Box home network.

Note:Here we show you how to connect a PlayStation to the FRITZ!Box using Sony PlayStation 4 (system software 1.75) as an example.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS.

Now the PlayStation is connected to the Internet via the FRITZ!Box. The PlayStation can then be used to join online games or use the Sony Entertainment Network to access the movie, television, or music services in the Internet, for example.

Note:You can find further information on configuring the PlayStation in its manual or on Sony's PlayStation website.

3 Setting up the FRITZ!Box for Internet access to the PlayStation

By default, the FRITZ!Box's firewall protects all of the devices in the home network from incoming connections and unsolicited data from the Internet. However, in order to use certain online games (for example Call of Duty) and individual chat functions, other users from the Internet must be able to access your PlayStation.

The following steps are only necessary if you are experiencing problems with joining online games or chats:

  • Set up the FRITZ!Box for automatic port sharing so that the PlayStation itself can open the ports in the FRITZ!Box that are used by the online game or the chat function.
    • or:
  • Set up static port sharing in the FRITZ!Box for the ports and IP protocols used by the online game or the chat function.

Note:The PlayStation's Internet Connection Test will also display NAT Type 3 for your FRITZ!Box if you configure port sharing manually. However, you will not experience compromises in performance when playing online games or using the chat function.
