Configuring network device for IPv6

In order to use the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) for communication in the Internet and local networks (LAN), you will have to configure the network devices (for example computers, network printers, game consoles) in the FRITZ!Box home network for IPv6.

Note:By default, IPv6 is already installed and enabled in Windows 10 / 8 / 7, macOS, and many other modern operating systems.

1 Configuring a network device

Windows 10 / 8

By default, IPv6 is already installed and enabled in Windows 10 and 8. We recommend the following settings for IPv6 communication with the FRITZ!Box:

  1. Press the keyboard shortcut "Windows key" + "X" and select "Control Panel" from the context menu.
  2. Click "Network and Internet" in the "Control Panel" menu.
  3. Click "Network and Sharing Center" and then "Change adapter settings".
  4. Click on the arrow next to the "More options" icon in the menu bar and select "Details".
  5. Right-click the connection that lists the (wireless or LAN) network adapter that connects the computer to the FRITZ!Box under "Device Name".
  6. Click "Properties".
  7. Select "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)".
  8. Click "Properties".
  9. Enable the options "Obtain an IPv6 address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
  10. Click "OK" to save the settings.

Windows 7

By default, IPv6 is already installed and enabled in Windows 7. We recommend the following settings for IPv6 communication with the FRITZ!Box:

  1. In Windows, click "Start" and then "Control Panel".
  2. Select "Category" from the drop-down list "View by:" (top right) in the "Control Panel" menu.
  3. Click "Network and Internet" and then "Network and Sharing Center".
  4. Click "Change adapter settings".
  5. Click on the arrow next to the "Change view" icon in the menu bar and select "Details".
  6. Right-click the connection that lists the (wireless or LAN) network adapter that connects the computer to the FRITZ!Box under "Device Name".
  7. Click "Properties".
  8. Select "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)".
  9. Click "Properties".
  10. Enable the options "Obtain an IPv6 address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".
  11. Click "OK" to save the settings.

macOS

By default, IPv6 is already installed and enabled in macOS. We recommend the following settings for IPv6 communication with the FRITZ!Box:

  1. Open the Finder and click "Applications".
  2. Click "System Preferences" and "Network".
  3. Select the following in the left-hand window:
    • If the FRITZ!Box is connected to the computer over wireless LAN:
      • Select the option "Wi-Fi" or "AirPort".
    • If the FRITZ!Box is connected to your computer via LAN (network adapter):
      • Select the option "Built-in Ethernet".
  4. Click "Advanced".
  5. Switch to the TCP/IP settings page and select the option "Using DHCP:" from the drop-down list "Configure IPv4". Select the option "Automatically" from the drop-down list "Configure IPv6".
  6. Click "OK" to save the settings.

Other operating systems or network devices (for example network printers, game consoles)

  • Configure the network device to automatically obtain an IPv6 address and DNS server (DHCP).

    Note:The manufacturer of the operating system or network device can provide you with information on IPv6 support and its configuration.
