Error message "Could not establish the connection to the device [...]"

You cannot use the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software to connect USB devices to a computer, although the software displays the FRITZ!Box and USB devices connected to it. The following error message is displayed:

  • "Could not establish the connection to the device. If the connection still cannot be established, check the firewall settings to make sure that the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection is registered and enabled as an exception."

Cause

  • A firewall is blocking communication between the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection and the FRITZ!Box, or the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection is either not correctly configured or not properly installed.

Important:Some of the settings described here are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled in the user interface. The configuration procedure and notes on functions given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS

1 Setting up the USB remote connection in FRITZ!Box

  1. Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "USB Devices" in the "Home Network" menu.
  3. Click on the "USB Remote Connection" tab.
  4. Enable the USB remote connection.
  5. Specify the type of devices for which the USB remote connection should be enabled (for example "USB storage media").
  6. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

2 Configuring your firewall for FRITZ!Box USB remote connection

  • Configure an exception for the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software in the firewall on the computer with this application,
    • or:
  • Configure the firewall so that it allows incoming and outgoing TCP and UDP connections from port 2066 on the FRITZ!Box to any destination ports on the computer.

    Note:You can find information on configuring the firewall in its manual, or consult its manufacturer directly.

3 Uninstalling the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software

Windows 10 / 8

  1. Press the keyboard shortcut "Windows key" + "X" and select "Control Panel" from the context menu.
  2. Click "Programs" and then "Programs and Features".
  3. Double-click on the entry "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection".
    • The window "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection Maintenance" opens.
  4. Select the option "Remove the application from this computer" in the window "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection Maintenance" and click "OK".

Windows 7

  1. In Windows, click "Start" and then "Control Panel".
  2. Select "Category" from the drop-down list "View by:" (top right) in the "Control Panel" menu.
  3. Click "Uninstall a program".
  4. Double-click on the entry "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection".
    • The window "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection Maintenance" opens.
  5. Select the option "Remove the application from this computer" in the window "FRITZ!Box USB remote connection Maintenance" and click "OK".
