FRITZ!WLAN Stick AC 430 Serwis

Wireless connection drops frequently

The wireless connection (WiFi) between a FRITZ!WLAN Stick and a wireless router (for example a FRITZ!Box) drops frequently.

Cause

  • The quality of the wireless connection is influenced by surrounding structural conditions (for example thickness and reinforcement of the walls) as well as other electronic devices in the vicinity such as microwaves, baby monitors, wireless speakers, and Bluetooth devices.

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the issue persists.

1 Installing the latest firmware for the wireless router

  • Install the latest firmware for your wireless router according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    Note:If you are using a FRITZ!Box, install the latest FRITZ!OS as described in this guide.

2 Installing the latest driver for the FRITZ!WLAN Stick

The latest driver optimizes the FRITZ!WLAN Stick's roaming behavior and prevents connections from dropping when using the roaming function:

Note:We used a FRITZ!Box as an example for configuration. Some FRITZ!Box settings are only displayed if the advanced view is enabled. You can find information on configuring a different router in its manual, or consult the manufacturer directly.

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. Check which wireless channel setting is enabled.
    • If the option "Set radio channel settings automatically (recommended)" is enabled:
      • Proceed with the following section.
    • If the option "Adjust radio channel settings" is enabled:
      1. Click "Additional settings" (if available).
      2. Select "100%" from the drop-down list "Maximum transmitter power".
      3. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

Setting the transmitter power of the FRITZ!WLAN Stick

  1. Double-click the FRITZ!WLAN icon in the notification area of the Windows taskbar (Systray).
  2. Click "Properties" in the "Connection Monitor" window.
  3. Select "100%" from the drop-down list "Transmitter power in %" under "Properties".
  4. Click "Close" to save the settings.

4 Finding the ideal location for wireless devices

  • If possible, position the wireless router in a room that is centrally located.
  • Do not position the wireless router directly in the corner of a room.
  • Position the wireless router so that it is as unobstructed as possible, i.e. not directly in back of or under an obstacle such as pieces of furniture or a heater.
  • Position the wireless router as high in the room as possible, for example on a shelf.
  • Position the wireless router so that there are as few obstacles as possible between it and the other wireless devices. In particular, metallic objects or objects containing water (for example a refrigerator, houseplants) significantly reduce the quality of the wireless signal.
  • Position the wireless router so that it is away from other transmitters (for example microwaves, baby monitors, wireless speakers, Bluetooth devices).
  • For testing purposes, position the wireless router and the computer with the FRITZ!WLAN Stick as close as possible.

    Note:Once you have ruled out all other sources of error, you can increase the distance between the two devices again.

5 Identifying sources of interference

  1. Turn off all devices that could interfere with the wireless network, one after the other.

    Note:All devices that emit radio waves are possible sources of interference. These include other wireless devices, wireless speakers, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors or microwaves, for example.

  2. After you have turned off a device, check whether the wireless connection is still impaired.

Once you have identified a device that causes interference, you can either leave it turned off or try to avoid the interference by setting the channel manually or changing the frequency band.

6 Selecting the best wireless channel

Note:We used a FRITZ!Box as an example for configuration. You can find information on configuring a different router in its manual, or consult the manufacturer directly.

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Channel" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. In the "Wireless Environment" section, click on the tab for the wireless frequency band being used (if available).
  4. Click on the link "Show disturbances to wireless network" (if available).
  5. Use the graph to determine which channel in the lower frequency range is least affected by other wireless networks and sources of interference.
  6. Enable the option "Adjust radio channel settings" in the "Radio Channel Settings" section.
  7. From the drop-down list "Radio channel", select the channel that was affected the least in the wireless frequency band being used.
  8. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
  9. Check whether the issue with your wireless connection still occurs.
    • If the issue with the wireless connection still occurs:
      • Repeat steps 3 - 9 with a wireless channel in the middle and then with one in the higher frequency range. Once you have finished testing, use the wireless channel that was least affected by disturbances.

        Important:The diagram of the wireless environment only reflects the current situation! The allocation of the frequency bands can change significantly over the course of the day because many wireless networks are turned on when in use. Therefore, check several times to see which wireless channels are least affected by interference.

7 Connecting the FRITZ!WLAN Stick without a USB hub

The following step is only necessary if you connected the FRITZ!WLAN Stick to a USB hub instead of connecting it directly to the USB port of your computer:

Note:The FRITZ!WLAN Stick can be used with many USB hubs that support at least USB 2.0. However, AVM cannot guarantee that USB hubs will work properly.

  1. Remove the USB hub from the computer for testing purposes.
  2. Connect the FRITZ!WLAN Stick directly to the USB port on your computer.

8 Installing the latest chipset drivers for your mainboard

  • On the computer, install the latest drivers for the mainboard's chipset (the chipset is a part of the mainboard that computer components are attached or connected to).

    Note:You can find the latest drivers in the download area on the mainboard or chipset manufacturer's website.

9 Changing the name of the wireless network (SSID)

If there are other wireless networks with the same name in the vicinity, wireless devices may automatically attempt to connect to the wrong wireless network. To avoid this, give your wireless router a unique name:

  1. Click "Wireless" ("WLAN") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Radio Network" in the "Wireless" ("WLAN") menu.
  3. In the field "Name of the wireless radio network (SSID)," enter a name of your choice for the frequency band you are using that does not contain special characters.

    Important:Not all wireless devices support all special characters. Therefore, only use standard Latin letters (not letters such as ä, ë, ö, ü, á, é, í) and numbers in the wireless network name.

  4. Click "Apply" to save your settings.

All wireless connections are cleared when you apply the new wireless network name. You must then reconfigure wireless connections to the wireless router.

10 Establishing a wireless connection to the 5 GHz frequency band

Some wireless routers provide a wireless network in the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz frequency band. The 5 GHz frequency band is subject to interference less frequently. Therefore, switch to this frequency band if your wireless devices support the 5 GHz frequency band:

Note:Not all wireless devices support the 5 GHz frequency band.
FRITZ!WLAN Stick AC 430, FRITZ!WLAN Stick AC 860 and FRITZ!WLAN Stick N (v2) support the 5 GHz frequency band.

  • Use the 5 GHz frequency band to establish the wireless connection to the router.

Now the FRITZ!WLAN Stick and the wireless router are ideally configured. The wireless connections between your wireless devices and the router are as stable as possible.

Note:If the previous measures did not succeed in sufficiently increasing the quality of your wireless connection, you can use a FRITZ!WLAN Repeater to extend the range and increase the stability of your wireless network.
