FRITZ!WLAN Stick is not detected automatically when connected to a USB port

When you connect your FRITZ!WLAN Stick to the USB port on your computer, it is either not detected or displayed as an "unknown device" (marked with a question mark) in the Device Manager. Installation of the FRITZ!WLAN Stick does not start automatically.

Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the issue persists.

1 Checking the driver installation

  1. Remove the FRITZ!WLAN Stick from the USB port on your computer and then reconnect it.
  2. Open the Windows Device Manager:
    1. Press the Windows key and the pause key on the keyboard at the same time.
    2. Only in Windows XP: Select the "Hardware" settings page.
    3. Click "Device Manager".
  3. Check whether the FRITZ!WLAN Stick is listed under the device class "Network adapters":
    • The FRITZ!WLAN Stick is listed and displayed with a red cross:
      1. Right-click the entry and select "Properties".
      2. Under "Device usage", select the option "Use this device (enable)".
      3. Click "OK".
    • The FRITZ!WLAN Stick is listed and displayed with a yellow exclamation point:
      1. Right-click the entry and select "Uninstall" or "Remove".
      2. Click "OK" and follow the instructions.
      3. Restart your computer and reinstall the FRITZ!WLAN Stick.
    • The FRITZ!WLAN Stick is listed and displayed with a black arrow pointing downwards:
      1. Right-click the entry and select "Activate".
      2. Click "OK".
    • The FRITZ!WLAN Stick is not listed:
      1. Check whether a "WLAN USB Device" is displayed under the device class "Other Devices".
      2. If you see this entry, right-click "WLAN USB Device", select "Uninstall > OK" and follow the instructions.
      3. Restart your computer and reinstall the FRITZ!WLAN Stick.

2 Connecting the FRITZ!WLAN Stick without a USB hub

The following step is only necessary if you connected the FRITZ!WLAN Stick to a USB hub instead of connecting it directly to the USB port of your computer:

Note:The FRITZ!WLAN Stick can be used with many USB hubs that support at least USB 1.1. However, AVM cannot guarantee that USB hubs will work properly.

  1. Remove the USB hub from the computer for testing purposes.
  2. Connect the FRITZ!WLAN Stick directly to the USB port on your computer.

3 Checking the USB port

Installing the latest chipset drivers for your mainboard

  • On the computer, install the latest drivers for the mainboard's chipset (the chipset is a part of the mainboard that computer components are attached or connected to).

Note:You can find the latest drivers in the download area on the mainboard or chipset manufacturer's website.

Testing a different USB device

  • If the FRITZ!WLAN Stick is still not detected, check whether other USB devices (for example USB printers) are detected when you connect them to the same USB port on the computer:
    • If the other USB devices are also not detected, then the USB port on the computer may be defective.

4 Testing on a different computer

  • Install the FRITZ!WLAN Stick on a different computer and check whether the same error also occurs with that computer:
    • If the error does not occur with the other computer, then your computer is causing the issue.
      • Consult the manufacturer of the computer.
