Using the USB remote connection to connect a USB storage device connected to FRITZ!Box to a computer
With the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software, you can use a USB storage device connected to the FRITZ!Box as if it were connected directly to the USB port on your computer.
Important:If you want to allow more than one computer and other devices to access the USB storage device, configure the USB storage device as a central storage location in the home network ("storage (NAS))"
Requirements / Restrictions
- Windows 10 / 8 / 7 (64-bit or 32-bit) is installed on the computer.
- Only one computer can access the USB storage device at a time.
- The FRITZ!Box media server is not available when the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection is active; you cannot access the storage with FRITZ!NAS (https://fritz.nas) or or MyFRITZ!.
Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.
1 Connecting a USB storage device to the FRITZ!Box
- Connect the USB storage device to a USB port on the FRITZ!Box.
Note:In accordance with the USB 3.0 specification, the FRITZ!Box supplies USB devices with a total of up to 900 mA. Connect devices that require more power to the FRITZ!Box via a USB hub with its own power supply (active USB hub).
2 Installing the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software
Install the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection software on the computer that you want to use the USB device connected to the FRITZ!Box with:
- Log on to the computer as the Windows user who wants to use the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection.
Important:If the user does not have administrator rights, you must enter a valid administrator password when installing or starting the software for the first time.
- Open the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Home Network" and then "USB / Storage".
- Click on the "USB Remote Connection" tab.
- Click on "Download".
- The window "USB Remote Connection" opens.
- If the window "USB Remote Connection" has a "Download" button:
- Click "Download" in the window "USB Remote Connection" and download the file "fritzbox-usb-fernanschluss.application".
- Double-click the downloaded file.
- Click "Install" and follow the instructions on your screen.
- Repeat steps 1 - 7 for all other Windows users who want to use the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection.
3 Enabling the USB remote connection for storage
- Click "Home Network" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "USB / Storage" in the "Home Network" menu.
- Click on the "USB Remote Connection" tab.
- Enable the USB remote connection and the option "USB storage media".
Important:If the USB remote connection is used for the device type "USB storage media", USB storage devices cannot be used with the FRITZ!Box's storage (NAS) function.
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.
4 Connecting a USB storage device to a computer via the USB remote connection
- Double-click the FRITZ!Box USB remote connection symbol in the notification area of the Windows taskbar (Systray).
- If you log in to your FRITZ!Box with the FRITZ!Box password, enter the password and leave the "Username" field blank.
- If you enter a name and password to log in to the FRITZ!Box, enter the name and password of a user who is authorized to access the FRITZ!Box settings.
Note:You can edit the account information and access rights of users under "System > FRITZ!Box Users" in the user interface.
- If you enter a name and password to log in to the FRITZ!Box, enter the name and password of a user who is authorized to access the FRITZ!Box settings.
- Click "Refresh".
- Right-click the USB storage device that you want to connect to the computer.
- Click "Connect".
Now the computer recognizes the USB storage device as a USB device and it can be used as if it were connected directly to a USB port on the computer.
Note:Before a different computer can access the USB storage device, you must clear the connection between the computer and the USB storage device in the USB remote connection software.
