Using the FRITZ!Box as a wireless repeater

You can connect the FRITZ!Box LTE as a wireless repeater to an existing FRITZ!Box (access point). Internet services configured in the existing FRITZ!Box are then also available to the FRITZ!Box LTE configured as the wireless repeater and the devices connected to it, such as computers and smartphones. The FRITZ!Box cannot be used as a wireless repeater with a router from another manufacturer.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The Wi-Fi network name (SSID) of the FRITZ!Box (access point) must be visible.
  • We cannot guarantee that you will not experience problems when watching cable TV content made available by the wireless repeater. We therefore recommend connecting media receivers either directly or by means of a powerline adapter (for example FRITZ!Powerline) to the FRITZ!Box (access point).

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Configuring the FRITZ!Box as a wireless repeater

Connecting the computer with the wireless repeater

  1. Use Wi-Fi or a network cable to connect a computer to the FRITZ!Box that you want to use as a wireless repeater.
  2. If the computer is already connected to the FRITZ!Box that establishes the internet connection, clear that connection.

Configuring the operating mode

  1. Click "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Repeater" in the "Wi-Fi" menu. If the menu is not displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  3. Enable the option "Repeater".
  4. Under "Access Point Selection", select the Wi-Fi network of your FRITZ!Box with internet access. If the access point is not displayed:
    1. Reduce the distance between the two devices.
    2. Click the "Refresh List" button and then select the access point.
  5. Enter the network key of the access point in the "Network key" field.
  6. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

Now the FRITZ!Box is configured as a wireless repeater.

Note:When the FRITZ!Box is configured as a wireless repeater, it can no longer be reached at http://fritz.box; instead, you must use the home network overview of the FRITZ!Box (access point) or the IP address assigned to it by the FRITZ!Box (access point).

2 Adjusting the Wi-Fi settings

Configure the following settings in the wireless repeater so that your wireless devices can always automatically connect to the FRITZ!Box with the best Wi-Fi reception (Wi-Fi roaming):

  1. Click "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click "Wi-Fi Network" ("Radio Network") in the "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") menu.
  3. For the Wi-Fi network being used, enter the same "Name of the Wi-Fi network (SSID)" that you entered in the access point. If the repeater supports more than one frequency band but only one Wi-Fi network is displayed, enable the Advanced View first.
  4. Click "Apply" to save the settings.
  5. Click "Security" in the "Wi-Fi" menu.
  6. Enable the option "WPA encryption".
  7. Select "WPA2 (CCMP)" for the "WPA mode". If not all of your wireless devices support WPA2 encryption, select "WPA + WPA2".
  8. In the "Network key" field, enter the same network key that you entered in the access point.
  9. Click "Apply" to save the settings.

3 Finding the ideal location for the FRITZ!Box

  1. Select a location for the FRITZ!Box being used as the wireless repeater where the quality of the Wi-Fi signal of the FRITZ!Box with internet access is good.
