Telephone does not ring when you receive a call
One or more of the telephones connected to the FRITZ!Box doesn't ring when someone calls you? ✔ Here's what to do.
Although you can make calls over the FRITZ!Box, one or more telephones sometimes do not ring or never ring when you receive calls to a landline number and/or an internet telephone number.
Simply proceed as described below. After each measure, check whether the problem is solved.
Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.
1 Number of calls over a DECT repeater is limited
A maximum of two of the telephones located in the reception area of a DECT repeater from another manufacturer ring when you receive a call. If you are using a FRITZ!DECT Repeater or a FRITZ!Box in DECT repeater mode, up to five telephones can ring at the same time.
2 Disabling the Do Not Disturb setting, call blocks, and call through
The telephone may not ring because Do Not Disturb, a call block, call diversion, or call through is enabled in the FRITZ!Box. Disable these settings in the FRITZ!Box:
- Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Telephony Devices" in the "Telephony" menu.
- Click the (Edit) button for the respective telephone.
- Click on the "Do Not Disturb" tab, disable any "Do Not Disturb" settings, and click "OK".
Important:Do Not Disturb cannot be set up for IP telephones connected to the "LAN/Wi-Fi" interface, for example FRITZ!App Fon.
- Click "Telephony" and then "Call Handling", and delete all call blocks.
- Click on the "Call Diversion" tab and delete any call diversion that were configured.
- Click on the "Call Through" tab.
- Disable call through and click "Apply".
3 Disabling "DECT Eco"
The following steps are only necessary if the problem occurs with a cordless telephone:
- Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "DECT" in the "Telephony" menu.
- Disable the option "DECT Eco" in the section "Radio Field Strength".
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.
If the telephone rings now, the DECT connection to the telephone was disturbed. Any devices that emit radio waves could be a source of interference. These include other DECT base stations, baby monitors, mobile telephones, and television antennas, for example. If the telephone does not receive the "wake up" signal from the FRITZ!Box in time and therefore does not wake up from standby mode, repositioning the telephone may help.
4 Connecting the telephone directly to the FRITZ!Box
The following steps are only necessary if the telephone is connected to a telephone system that is connected to the FRITZ!Box:
- Disconnect the telephone from the telephone system and connect it directly to the FRITZ!Box.
If the telephone rings now, the telephone system is incorrectly configured. Refer to the manufacturer of the telephone system for information on how to configure it.
5 Selecting the correct connection type for use behind a device
If you connected the FRITZ!Box to the landline through another device (for example a cable modem), you must configure the correct connection type in the FRITZ!Box. The connection type depends on the cabling and not the number of available telephone numbers. If you connected the FRITZ!Box to an analog extension, you must select "analog line" and if you connected it to an S0 bus you must select "ISDN line".
- Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
- Click the "New Telephone Number" button.
- Enable the option "Landline number" and click "Next".
- Select the type of landline and click "Next".
Important:You are only asked to select the type of landline (analog or ISDN line) when you configure the first landline number. If you want to change the connection type later, you must delete all of the landline numbers you configured first.
- Enter your landline number or ISDN telephone numbers (MSNs) and click "Next".
6 Assigning telephone numbers to telephones
The procedure depends on how the telephone is connected to the FRITZ!Box:
Entering telephone numbers in ISDN telephones
- Delete all of the telephone numbers configured in the telephone.
- Re-enter the desired telephone numbers in the telephone exactly as they are displayed in the FRITZ!Box user interface in the settings for the telephone on the "FON S0" tab.
Note:You can find information on configuring the telephone numbers (MSNs) in the telephone's manual, or consult its manufacturer directly.
Assigning numbers to cordless telephones, analog telephones, and IP telephones
- Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Telephony Devices" in the "Telephony" menu.
- Click the (Edit) button for the respective telephone.
- Configure the telephone so that it reacts to incoming calls to the desired telephone number: Enter the number under "Outgoing calls" or "Incoming calls", or enable the option "React to all numbers".
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.
Defining telephone numbers for FRITZ!App Fon
Do not configure the telephone numbers for FRITZ!App Fon in the FRITZ!Box user interface, configure them in the app itself:
- Start FRITZ!App Fon.
- Tap the three-dot menu on the top right and then tap "Settings".
- If you are using FRITZ!App Fon in iOS, tap "Telephone Numbers".
- If you are using FRITZ!App Fon in Android and use the app with several FRITZ!Boxes, first tap the gear icon next to the desired FRITZ!Box.
- Under "Outgoing calls", select the number to be used by FRITZ!App Fon for making calls.
- Under "Incoming Calls", specify which telephone numbers FRITZ!App Fon should react to when you receive calls.
7 Disabling the energy-saving mode for ISDN telephones
The FRITZ!Box is equipped with a number of energy-saving mechanisms. For example, communication between the internal S0 bus and ISDN devices is terminated when there are no active connections. Some ISDN devices have problems with this function. Therefore, disable this function in the FRITZ!Box if ISDN devices are having problems establishing connections:
- Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Telephony Devices" in the "Telephony" menu.
- Click the (Edit) button next to the ISDN device you want to configure.
- Click on the "Properties" tab.
- Disable the option "enable energy-saving mode for internal S0 bus".
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.
8 Maintaining a permanent internet connection
Calls to your internet telephone number can only reach the FRITZ!Box if an internet connection is active. Therefore, configure the FRITZ!Box so that it maintains a permanent internet connection:
- Click "Internet" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Account Information" in the "Internet" menu.
- Click "Change connection settings".
- Enable the option "Maintain permanently (recommended for flat rates)". If the option is not shown, the FRITZ!Box is already permanently connected to the internet.
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.
9 Setting up port forwarding for internet telephony
- Click "Telephony" in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
- Click "Telephone Numbers" in the "Telephony" menu.
- Click on the "Line Settings" tab.
- Click "Changing the Settings" in the "Telephony connection" section.
- Enable the option "Keep port sharing of the internet router enabled for telephony".
- Select a suitable time interval. Select "30 sec." if you do not know how long temporary port forwarding rules will be maintained.
- Click "Apply" to save the settings.
10 Disabling call diversions at the provider's end
The telephone may not ring because call diversion is enabled at your telephony provider's end. Therefore, disable all call diversions configured at the provider's end:
- Check in your telephony provider's app or in your personal customer area on your provider's website whether call diversion is enabled for one of your telephone numbers.
- Disable any call diversions configured at the provider's end.
11 Having your numbers checked
If the telephone still does not ring when you receive calls to an internet telephone number although the internet connection and internet telephone number were configured correctly, your internet telephony provider is experiencing a problem:
Important:After porting telephone numbers (for example after switching to an IP-based connection), telephone numbers can often be used immediately for outgoing calls. However, you cannot receive calls to these numbers for one or two days because the telephone numbers are not completely ported until then.
- Contact your internet telephony provider and have your number checked.
