Integrating the FRITZ! Smart Home into the Matter network using the Amazon Alexa app

With the Amazon Alexa app you can link the FRITZ!Smart Gateway with the Matter network of an Amazon smart hub. The FRITZ!Smart Gateway acts as a Matter bridge and seamlessly integrates all devices in your FRITZ! Smart Home into the Matter network.

In the Matter network, smart home devices can be combined with Matter-compatible devices from other manufacturers and then centrally controlled and managed with the Amazon Alexa app. If you are using an Amazon smart hub with smart speaker (for example Echo Dot), you can also easily control your FRITZ! Smart Home by voice command.

Note:It is still possible to use FRITZ!App Smart Home and the FRITZ!Box user interface to control the smart home devices without restriction.

Requirements

  • The Amazon smart hub (for example Echo Dot, Echo, Echo Show) supports use as a Matter controller and is connected to the FRITZ!Box via LAN or Wi-Fi.
  • The mobile device with the Amazon Alexa app is connected to the FRITZ!Box via Wi-Fi.

1 Installing the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Smart Gateway

  1. Click "System" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Smart Gateway.
  2. Click "Update" in the "System" menu.
  3. Click on the "FRITZ!OS Version" tab.
  4. Click the "Find New FRITZ!OS" button.
  5. Click the "Start Update" button.

2 Connecting the FRITZ!Smart Gateway to a Matter network

  1. Click "Smart Home" in the user interface of the FRITZ!Smart Gateway.
  2. Click "Devices and Groups" in the "Smart Home" menu.
  3. Click on the "Matter Networks" tab.
  4. Click the button "Link Matter Network". The window "Link Matter Network" opens.
  5. Click "Start Registration".
  6. Open the Alexa app on your mobile device.
  7. Tap "+" in the app and then "Device".
  8. Tap "Other" in the list and then "matter".
  9. Tap "Yes".
  10. Scan the QR code in the user interface of the FRITZ!Smart Gateway with the mobile device's camera or enter the code manually.
  11. Tap "Yes" in the app under the message "This device isn't Matter compatible... Do you want to set up this device anyway?"
  12. Follow the wizard's instructions. As soon as the connection to your Alexa account is established, a window with the message "Registration successful" is displayed in the user interface of the FRITZ!Smart Gateway.
  13. In this window, enter a name for the Matter network and click "Finished" to save the settings.

Now the FRITZ!Smart Gateway is linked with the Matter network of the Amazon smart hub and you can manage and control all of the devices in your FRITZ! Smart Home, and define automatic sequences for them in the Amazon Alexa app.
