Determining FRITZ!Powerline's MAC address
A MAC address (Media Access Control address) is the hardware address of a network interface (for example Wi-Fi) and serves as a unique identifier of a device in a network. Each network interface of the FRITZ!Powerline device has its own MAC address.
FRITZ!Powerline uses the MAC addresses for
- wireless devices connected to the Wi-Fi network of the powerline device.
- the powerline connection in a powerline network.
- devices that are connected to the LAN port on the powerline device via network cable.
Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Powerline device.
1 Determining the Wi-Fi MAC address for registering wireless devices
- Click "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") in the user interface of FRITZ!Powerline.
- Click "Wi-Fi Network" ("Radio Network") in the "Wi-Fi" ("Wireless") menu.
- The MAC address is listed in the section "Active Frequency Bands".
2 Determining the powerline MAC address
The powerline MAC address of the FRITZ!Powerline device is printed on the type label on the back side of the device or it can also be determined using the user interface:
- Click "Powerline" in the user interface of FRITZ!Powerline.
- The MAC address is listed in the menu "Powerline" under "Device information".
3 Determining the LAN MAC address
The LAN MAC address of the FRITZ!Powerline device is either displayed in the router to which the powerline device is connected as a LAN bridge or can determined on a computer connected to a LAN port on the powerline device. The procedure depends on the operating system of the computer:
Windows
- Press the keyboard shortcut Windows key + R.
- Enter cmd in the "Open" field and click "OK".
- Enter nslookup fritz.powerline in the command prompt window and press Enter.
- Make note of the IP address of the FRITZ!Powerline device displayed next to the entry "Address:".
- Enter arp -a [IP address of the FRITZ!Powerline device] and press Enter.
Example:
arp -a 192.168.178.20 - The MAC address of the FRITZ!Powerline device is displayed under the entry "Physical Address".
macOS
- Open the Finder.
- Click "Applications" and then "Utilities".
- Open Terminal.
- Enter nslookup fritz.powerline in the Terminal and press Enter.
- Make note of the IP address of the FRITZ!Powerline device displayed next to the entry "Address:".
- Enter arp [IP address of the FRITZ!Powerline device] and press Enter.
Example:
arp 192.168.178.20 - Make note of the MAC address of the FRITZ!Powerline device.
Linux
- Open Terminal. If you are using Ubuntu, you can open Terminal by pressing the keyboard shortcut CTRL + ALT + T.
- Enter nslookup fritz.powerline in the Terminal and press Enter.
- Make note of the IP address of the FRITZ!Powerline device displayed next to the entry "Address:".
- Enter arp [IP address of the FRITZ!Powerline device] and press Enter.
Example:
arp 192.168.178.20 - Make note of the MAC address of the FRITZ!Powerline device.
